District Budget Ignores Ward 5 Parks and Recreation Facilities
In recent emails posted to Brookland’s neighborhood e-group, residents wondered why prominent parks in Ward 5 were so shabby. An analysis of the District’s spending so far this year reveals that Ward 5 received the lowest amount of funding for its parks and recreation facilities out of all eight wards.

DDOT Creates $2.25 Million Landscaping Plan for 12th Street
The plan calls for removing dead and dying trees, planting new trees, installing a “welcome to Brookland” entrance plaza, and creating “pedestrian parks” at selected intersections.

Decision to Kill New Libraries in Ward 5 Exposed — DCPL Reacts

In August, District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) approached a consulting firm about developing cost estimates to renovate or rebuild Ward 5’s two libraries. DCPL spokesperson George Williams cautioned that the enquiry was a “planning exercise,” not a sign that DCPL intended to make any improvements to Ward 5’s aging libraries.
